Departmental Overview

Berkeley Public Health (BPH) aims to improve population health, especially for the most vulnerable, through interdisciplinary collaborations, preeminent education, and transformational research. The Wolf Lab in the Division of Infectious Diseases and Vaccinology (School of Public Health) and the Center for Computational Biology at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for an SRA 1, in the area of gut microbiome research.

This position will support the Wolf Lab by performing microbial culturing techniques and gnotobiotic animal husbandry. We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic biologist with the ability to learn new techniques and troubleshoot experimental systems. The microbiota of the mammalian gut is a complex community of individual microbial strains shaped by diet, microbial competition, and the host. The Wolf lab studies the assembly and function of the gut microbiota in vitro (anaerobic culture) and in vivo (gnotobiotic mice). The SRA 1 position will support the lab's research in both model systems and interact with Ph.D. students and other trainees.

Responsibilities

• Molecular biology techniques such as DNA isolation, PCR, and sequence library preparation.
• Germ-free mouse maintenance and experiments.
• Bacterial culturing.
• General lab management and training new employees.
• Participates in workshops, trainings, and other professional development activities.
• Other duties, as assigned.

Required Qualifications

• Experience working in a research environment.
• Strong problem-solving skills.
• Thorough and effective verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills and presentation skills.
• Excellent organizational, administrative and time management skills, ability to work independently as well as cooperatively with team members.
• Microbiome research experience.
• Laboratory research experience.
• Experience caring for laboratory animals.
• Organized and attentive to detail.

Education:

• Bachelor's degree and/or equivalent experience/training.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience writing academic manuscripts for peer-reviewed publication.

This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $27.44 (step 1.0) - $28.70 (step 6.0).

• This is a 100%, full-time (40 hours per week), career position that is eligible for full UC benefits.
• This position is non-exempt and paid bi-weekly.
