The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has an exciting career opportunity to serve as a Veterinary Medical Officer in the Health Effects Laboratory Division (HELD). The incumbent is also responsible for directing the animal health program, which focuses on rodent models of work-associated diseases; and collaborating with researchers to ensure veterinary care, control, and prevention of laboratory animal disease and zoonosis.
We are seeking an experienced veterinarian with knowledge of advanced principles and techniques of laboratory animal management and veterinary medicine. The work requires independent evaluation, leadership, direction, and technical expertise for a broad range of medical, scientific, and public health issues related to the animal health program.
NIOSH is part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. A career at NIOSH means joining one of the best places to work as a public servant, protecting the lives of all workers.
Dr. Ann Hubbs shares why she enjoys living in Morgantown and working at NIOSH, “It’s a beautiful area with opportunities to collaborate with scientists at WVU and NIOSH. In my 31 years here, I have had the opportunity to play a role in discoveries that help workers stay healthy. For me that included a role in identifying the hazards of diacetyl in the microwave popcorn industry, in identifying the toxicity of some of the earliest products of nanotoxicology, and in identifying the causes for the re-emergence of the most severe form of Black Lung in coal miners in Appalachia. I also got to play a role in emergency responses to the Anthrax events of 2001, the monkeypox outbreak of 2003, Hurricane Katrina in 2005, and COVID-19. Great colleagues and making a difference in our world, while living in a beautiful place – what more can one ask for in a career?”
