Iowa State University is currently seeking Animal Caretakers for our Large Animal Hospital and are hiring for multiple shifts. By Applying to this posting you will be considered for all open positions.
Under direct supervision, the animal caretaker performs the work necessary in handling, feeding, and caring for animals and animal facilities in compliance with federal, state, and/or university regulations.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
Clean and disinfect large animal patient stalls after patient discharge following ISU SOP and biosecurity protocols.
Regularly deep clean all areas of the large animal hospital.
Power wash permanent equipment (cattle chutes, tilt tables, stocks) in large animal hospital.
Disinfect all areas of the hospital according to demand and schedule.
Help maintain cleaning records.
Set up treatment areas and surgery suites for procedures most commonly performed in each area.
Stock commonly used materials (bandage materials, needles, syringes, etc.) in each treatment room according to its use.
Stock bedding and hay in all patient housing areas of the large animal hospital.
Take items to sterilization and retrieve sterilized items. Put sterile packs and steri-peels away appropriately.
Pick up orders from the store room and restock appropriately.
Submit bloodwork and samples to clin path and VDL.
Regularly check for expired hospital items and dispose of properly.
Organize storage areas of the hospital and label as needed.
Use the forklift to stock pallets of bedding or pallets of fluids.
Use the gator and arena drag to prep the Performance Evaluation Facility for lameness exams.
Use the electric utility vehicle to move supplies, feed, and various items around the hospital.
Collect dirty laundry and dispense clean throughout the large animal hospital.
Assist with washing, drying, folding and putting away isolation laundry.
Assist with unloading hay
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of standard operating procedures for laboratory animal care or livestock care, as applicable.
Ability to learn and apply federal, state, and/or university regulations regarding animal care and use in research and teaching.
Ability to understand, communicate, and execute oral and written instructions.
Ability to keep accurate records.
Ability to recognize changes in conditions of animals and animal room environment, malfunctioning equipment, and unsafe conditions.
Ability to construct and maintain related equipment and facilities.
Ability to lift and/or move 50-100 pounds.
Ability to perform physical labor such as restraining animals, loading and unloading supplies and animals, and standing for prolonged periods of time.
Ability to work around noise, dust, odors, fumes, and extremes in temperature.
