The Division of Laboratory Animal Resources (DLAR) at the University of Pittsburgh has an opening for a laboratory animal veterinarian at the Associate Director level. As a member of the DLAR senior leadership team you will:
Oversee and direct the provision of veterinary care at multiple DLAR facilities;
Provide guidance to clinical veterinarians, managers and supervisors regarding facility operations, utilization of resources, regulatory compliance, and fiscal responsibility;
Provide recommendations that impact the University’s animal care and use program, policies, and practices.
Responsibilities include:
The provision of veterinary medical care and research support to a variety of animal species in accordance with current veterinary medical standards, federal regulations, PHS Policy, and AAALAC standards;
The supervision, direction, and professional development of clinical veterinarians and veterinary technical staff;
Providing guidance to research personnel on animal model and protocol development, the selection of appropriate anesthetics and analgesics, surgical techniques and procedures, pre- and post-operative care, rodent breeding colony management, and methods of euthanasia;
Training DLAR and research personnel on the humane care and use of laboratory animals, veterinary medical procedures and techniques, the appropriate use of veterinary equipment, occupational health and safety issues, and other topics relevant to working with laboratory animals;
Effective communication and collaboration that foster and maintain productive working relationships with DLAR leaders, investigators and research personnel, the IACUC, EH&S personnel, and other entities involved with the animal care and use program;
Active participation on the IACUC;
Participation in the veterinary on-call rotation.

Relevant training, experience, and skills:
Minimum Education Requirements: Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree at an AVMA accredited college of Veterinary Medicine or equivalent.
Minimum of 5 years of medical and/or surgical experience with a wide variety of laboratory animal species, preferably including nonhuman primates and agricultural species;
Three to five years of experience supervising, developing, and managing the performance of veterinary professional staff;
Veterinary licensure in at least one of the United States, preferably PA;
The Division of Laboratory Animal Resources (DLAR) at the University of Pittsburgh is responsible for the daily operations and management of the eleven animal facilities supporting the Schools of the Health Sciences and the provision of veterinary care and animal research support in accordance with applicable regulations, guidelines, and institutional policies. The University’s AAALAC accredited animal care program comprises approximately 325,000 sq. ft. of animal housing and support space for a wide variety of species that includes rodents, rabbits, ferrets, cats, dogs, farm species, nonhuman primates, and aquatic species.
