This position provides care for laboratory animals being bred and/or maintained in an animal care facility. Performs basic, entry-level duties in the care of laboratory research animals; maintenance and sanitation of equipment and supplies; and provides assistance to staff, clinicians, and/or researchers/research staff at the University of Illinois, Biologic Resources Laboratory (BRL) to support scientific investigations or instruction.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Provide basic animal care: Feed and water animals. Change animal cages or clean pens as scheduled. Assist in receiving, storing and rotating feed, bedding and other animal care supplies and equipment.
Handle and restrain animals as directed: Transfer animals, equipment and supplies as directed. Groom, bathe and exercise animals. Dispose of animal carcasses.
Observe and monitor animal health and wellness: Perform census inspections of animals for signs of disease. Record animal care data and advise higher-level personnel of any abnormal indicators. Monitor environmental controls; complete appropriate animal husbandry logs and documentation.
Maintain sanitation and animal care equipment of facility:
Remove excreta and debris from cages, rooms and related areas.
Clean, sanitize and sterilize cages, racks, equipment, supplies or animal care rooms.
Provide elementary assistance to facility users with routine, preventative and/or simple technical animal care procedures, treatments and record keeping; assist higher level animal care personnel in more advanced animal care and duties.
Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications Required:
High school diploma or equivalent.
