The UCLA Stein Eye Institute and Department of Ophthalmology invite applications for postdoctoral scholars to work on basic science and translational research projects in The Retina Biochemistry & Clinical Disease Modeling Laboratory. Radu group focuses on studying the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) in normal and pathological status pertinent to Stargardt disease and age-related macular degeneration.
Research: Current studies are directed towards understanding the intercellular organelle dynamics in the RPE centered on lysosomes maturation, recycling of retinoids and lipids relevant to cell bioenergetics (mitochondria), and identification of complement-mediated signaling pathways in aging and disease status. Projects will include in vivo studies utilizing novel mouse models and in vitro biochemical and electrophysiological approaches to investigate disease pathology in a 'disease-in-a-dish' model. Experiments will involve cutting-edge cell and molecular biology techniques including differentiation of iPSCs and iPSC-derived RPE cells, spatial transcriptomes/ multiomics analysis, andadvanced microscopy imaging tools.
Qualifications: The position is for a highly motivated PhD, MD, or MD/PhD who aims to develop an independent research career. The postdoctoral fellow will lead research projects, execute experiments and analyze data, write manuscripts and present at scientific meetings.
Requirements Knowledge of and experience with mouse genetics, cell and molecular biology, and basic biochemistry techniques are required for this position. A strong background in stem cell biology, in vitrodifferentiation of iPSCs, and RNASeq/single cell transcriptome analysis are preferred. Experience in confocal microscopy, advanced molecular biology, genomic data analysis, and mammalian cell culture are highly desirable. Specific training in retinoids biochemistry related to visual processes will be offered during the fellowship. Candidates must possess strong communication skills, ability to work independently and in a team setting, display self-initiative and attention to detail, enthusiasm to explore new techniques and concepts, and adherence to highest ethical principles while working with laboratory animals. Individualized mentorship is tailored to their personal career and publications goals. Successful candidate will participate in weekly lab meetings, seminar series (both our Institute and UCLA), as well as national and international specialized conferences. Regular meetings with the PI will reassure common scientific expectations are met, and skill-building and advance knowledge in the field are achieved.
Apply: Interested applicants should email an updated CV, complete contact information for 3 references, cover letter describing published and ongoing work, and a statement of future research interest (1-2 pages) to: Roxana Radu radu@jsei.ucla.edu.
