Job Overview
The Animal Technician 3 supports Georgetown University's research vision and mission by providing a compliant and ethical research facility to conduct biomedical research in support of animal research initiatives. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Provides care of laboratory animals in a safe, humane and sanitary manner using equipment and established procedures, including safe handling of animals, materials, and equipment exposed to hazardous (biohazardous, radiological or chemical) agents
Assists with equipment maintenance, such as autoclaves, water treatment systems, cage wash equipment and caging systems
Serves as a model for newer, less experienced technicians.
Handles technical procedures the may include giving treatments, identification procedures, and euthanasia
Follows standard operating procedures and maintains compliance with applicable laws and regulations
Work Interactions
Reporting to the Animal Care Supervisor, Facility Manager, and Director of the Division of Comparative Medicine, the Animal Care Technician 3 is a contributing and accountable member of the Husbandry staff team, exemplifying teamwork by interacting with, training and assisting other animal care technicians, veterinary technicians, veterinarians and research faculty and staff in a professional and solution-oriented manner.
Requirements and Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalency
AALAS technician certification at the LAT level or higher is required or equivalent qualifications.
Certification at the LAT or LATG level or equivalent qualifications?
A working knowledge and experience with essential laboratory animal husbandry responsibilities and techniques - preference for 5 years of animal husbandry or related animal care experience
A confident and calm demeanor for the handling and restraint of mice, rats and other species as appropriate
Verbal and written communication skills to read, follow instructions, and participate in business discussions in English
Physical Environment
The Animal Technician 3 works in a designated area and also spends a significant amount of time in the animal facility where they could be exposed to biological hazards, chemicals, and laboratory animals.
As needed, they must lift fifty pounds, work in hot and/or steamy environments, work with animals/animal odors, and perform work that involves repetitive bending, twisting and pushing motions.
Essential The Animal Care Specialist 3 is designated as an essential position, requiring incumbent to report to work during inclement weather at the regularly scheduled time, regardless of whether the University is closed, opening late, or closing early.
