Johns Hopkins University Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery has a position available for an Animal research specialist. The specialist will primarily provide clinical, operative, and post-operative care and other research support for rodents (mice and rats), rabbits, pigs, nonhuman primates and other species. The specialist will also perform microsurgical procedures as well as provide technical and anesthetic support for research faculty (principal investigators) and postdoctoral research fellows during clinical surgeries and case management.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
Knowledge of current regulations, policies and principles for the care and use of laboratory animals.
Knowledge and experience with basic surgical and microsurgical techniques and procedures.
Ability to handle, restrain and determine the sex of laboratory animals without causing injury or harm to animal, self, and others.
Ability to understand and follow detailed oral and written instructions.
Ability to read and write in order to maintain records, read instructions, labels, etc.
Ability to interact and work with faculty, students, staff, and visitors in a knowledgeable, respectful and courteous manner.
Ability to discuss animal related projects with investigators and report these discussions to the supervisor.
Ability to work under environmental conditions that require the use of safety equipment.
Ability to lift, carry or otherwise move and position objects and materials weighing up to 50 lbs.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field required.
Two years laboratory experience in the specialty or performing related techniques.
Master's degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Two years related laboratory work experience preferred.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers.
