Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Veterinary Resident for the Office for Research and Rutgers University Animal Care (RUAC). As part of Office for Research and RUAC, this position will provide clinical veterinary care and oversight to a wide variety of animal species (Rodents, Aquatic species, Rabbits, Pigs, Dogs, NHP, Woodchucks, Gerbils, Hamsters, Guinea pigs, and Farm animal species) owned by the University and used in teaching and research. The Veterinary Resident works under the direct supervision of the Director of Veterinary Services, and all other veterinarian mentors/faculty in the Residency Training Program in Laboratory Animal Medicine. This position is a 3-year term position with one year of research requirement. The position includes assigned rotations in various animal research facilities at Rutgers University, Bristol Myers Squibb (BMS) and Princeton University. The position works closely with veterinary staff and animal care staff to ensure that appropriate housing and care is provided for animals and works with faculty and researchers who use animals to ensure humane treatment of animals in accordance with applicable laws, regulations and guidelines. In support of research and teaching, this position will provide instructional and hands-on training, assist in novel technique development, and will perform clinical and technical services such as providing clinical care to all animals, experimental surgery, and surgical and anesthesia support.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
Makes clinical rounds to all Rutgers University campuses' (Busch, Livingston, Cook, Camden, Newark and New Brunswick) animal facilities to evaluate the health of the animals and assure compliance with regulatory standards.
Consults with the campus supervisor/manager and facility veterinarians to correct deficiencies noted.
Assists in implementing systems for maintaining appropriate records for animal use, experimentation, and treatment.
Provides for routine physical examinations of university owned animals.
Performs diagnostic laboratory procedures and quarantine procedures.
Participates in the health surveillance program and assist in monitoring preventive medicine. Performs necropsies, recommends, and conducts treatments and/or immunizations as required. Provides reports of findings to faculty and facility management.
Responds to routine and emergency requests for veterinary care, including on-call duty during nights and weekends, and holidays.
Designs, implements and performs research projects related to laboratory animal medicine. Provides familiarity with research techniques and expertise in the humane use of animals for teaching and research.
Prepares manuscripts for publication and presents research data at internal and external meetings.
Attends and gives federally mandated training sessions on a regular basis consistent with needs at each of the campuses during the rotations.
Prepares materials for American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) board certification and attends all didactic training events such as seminars, pathology rounds, journal clubs, special topics lectures to provide individuals with a broad foundation in laboratory animal medicine.
Makes presentations as requested.
Trains animal caretakers/technicians and the veterinary technicians in conduct of diagnostic tests, and trains faculty, staff, and students in the appropriate care and use of laboratory animals and selected procedures used in animal research.
Minimum Education and Experience:
Requires a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree (e.g. D.V.M. or V.M.D.) from an accredited veterinary school or equivalent.

Equipment Utilized:
Needs to have familiarity with veterinary equipment, must be able to assist with the development of Standard Operating Procedures, and be able to train staff on the correct use and maintenance of this equipment.
This position requires the employee to walk and stand for several hours when conducting inspections of animal facilities and laboratories, the ability to move up to 50 lbs due to needs of large animal sedation and recovery, and to work with large farm animals.
Special Conditions:
Must pass a post-offer, pre-placement medical evaluation to include a medical history and physical examination.
Must participate in the occupational health program for animal workers.
Per federal regulation, must undergo a criminal background check in order to be able to work with controlled substances.
