Assistant Professor

Department of Comparative Medicine, University of Washington

The Department of Comparative Medicine (DCM), University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle WA invites applications for one open position for an American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM)-certified or -eligible laboratory animal veterinarian and scientist to join an exciting team of academic veterinarians as a full-time Assistant Professor (without tenure due to source of funding). This is a 12-month service period (July - June) position with an anticipated start date of Winter/Spring 2021. Primary responsibilities of this position include conducting independent research and participating in regulatory medicine (protocol review, investigator training, etc). Participation in the clinical care of all laboratory animal species and mentoring of veterinary residents in clinical, regulatory medicine, and research methodology are also required. Research laboratory start-up funds will be provided by the DCM.

The successful candidate is expected to establish (with mentoring) an independent research program including preparation of grants and manuscripts, and mentoring of graduate students and laboratory animal medicine (LAM) residents in research methodology. This position will also participate in overseeing, mentoring, and teaching veterinary technicians and LAM residents in the clinical, regulatory, and surgical care of a wide variety of laboratory animal species in both informal and didactic settings.

The DCM is an academic Department in the UW School of Medicine, and has a faculty of 45 primary, clinical, and affiliate veterinarians and scientists who have diverse training and expertise in laboratory animal medicine, veterinary pathology, surgery, internal medicine, and aquatic animal medicine. DCM faculty research interests are broad and include specific expertise in hematologic cancer, developmental immunology, inflammatory lung disease, innate immunity, inflammatory bowel disease and colon cancer, comparative pathology, nutrition/metabolism, embryonic stem cell biology, and aging. Qualifications

Applicants must have a DVM/VMD from an AVMA accredited institution (or foreign equivalent) and be licensed to practice veterinary medicine in the United States. Three years of experience in laboratory animal medicine and board certification or eligibility in the ACLAM is required. Positive factors for consideration include, but are not limited to: Independent and/or collaborative grants (such as KO1 awards); PhD in a relevant field (or foreign equivalent) or 5 years of advanced research training. Candidates must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
