Position Details:Summary of Duties:Located in the College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, this Research Technologist position contributes to the fulfillment of the university's mission and vision by providing support to the Cheng laboratory in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences. This position conducts research on heart disease using biochemical, molecular and cellular biology techniques. This position carries out experiments in cell culture and pre-clinical animal models under the direction of the principal investigator. This position also provides general support to ensure the laboratory operates safely, smoothly, and efficiently. Duties include maintaining laboratory equipment, ordering supplies, and managing animal colonies.
Job Duties: 70% Laboratory and Animal Research- Under general supervision conduct laboratory/animal research.
- Perform biomedical research techniques, such as tissue culture, nucleic acid and protein analyses. Evaluate research protocols for accuracy and consistency.
- Assist with genetically engineered animal colonies, mouse and rat breeding. Perform genotyping, drug injection, health documentation, and tissue collection.
- Prepare reports (charts, graphs, etc.) suitable for informal and formal presentations, as well as publications.
- Attend and present during regular laboratory meetings.
20% Laboratory Maintenance - Monitor, order and stock lab supplies.
- Maintain and calibrate laboratory equipment. Maintain laboratory records.
- Properly dispose of laboratory waste, biomedical waste, broken glassware, and any other hazardous materials.
- Keep laboratory clean and organized.
- Monitor for safety.
5% Training- Assist with scheduling, instruction, and training of students.
5% Miscellaneous- Miscellaneous appropriate duties as assigned by supervisor.
Required Qualifications:- Two (2) years experience as a laboratory technician, research aide, OR equivalent; OR a Bachelor's Degree in an appropriate field of science OR technology; OR equivalent education/experience.
Preferred Qualifications:- Knowledge in biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology or pharmacology.
- Experience performing bench work in a research laboratory.
- Animal handling skills.
- Experience in ordering and maintaining lab inventory.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as a team player.
