Departmental Overview
The Office of Laboratory Animal Care (OLAC) is a 'Research Support Unit' under of the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research at the University of California, Berkeley. OLAC's mission is to support UC Berkeley's quality research program by promoting the highest standards of animal care, welfare, regulatory compliance, education, training and customer service. OLAC is responsible for overseeing the centralized animal care and use program on the Berkeley campus. OLAC provides health care, research and teaching assistance, and housing facilities for all animals that are used for research and teaching on this campus. OLAC provides a range of services, including: a) Daily animal care b) Administration of the animal health care program c) Facility maintenance d) Room monitoring e) The processing of animal and pharmaceutical orders, f) Veterinary research service support, including quarantine g) Transfer and shipment of animals h) Working with controlled substances and their disposal. In coordination with the Animal Care and Use Committee (ACUC), OLAC works with investigators to ensure compliance of all state and federal regulations and provides information regarding training requirements. The Office of Laboratory Animal Care provides campus-wide assistance to our researchers, investigators, faculty and students, to fulfill the mission of the University in research and teaching.

Responsibilities
Provides quality medical and surgical care to a variety of instructional and research animals
Performs animals' physical examinations, gross necropsies, interprets clinical laboratory data and discusses the results with the appropriate investigators and/or staff
Participates in after hours, weekend and holiday veterinary coverage rotation.
Provides supportive research services through guidance, advice and consultation with investigators, faculty, students and technical personnel in the proper conduct of research and the appropriate environments, housing, care and techniques associated with the research.
Evaluates assigned Animal Use Protocols (AUP) and provides assessment to Animal Care and Use Committee.
Participates in after hours, weekend and holiday veterinary coverage rotation.
Provides training as requested by supervisor for all levels of UCB staff, veterinary students and post-doctoral residents from other institutions.
Maintains professional organization memberships, attends meetings regularly in veterinary, laboratory animal medicine, primatology, herpetological and related fields at local, national and international societies and organizations.
Accompanies external and internal regulatory authorities on site-visits and inspections of the facilities and program.
Assists investigators in the development of AUP's that comply with campus, federal and state regulations.
Required Qualifications
Ability to carry out a range of responsibilities with only general direction.
Thorough knowledge of biology and care of commonly used laboratory animal species, diseases of research interest and/or concern.
Knowledge of experimental surgical techniques and post-surgical care and experimental methods.
Thorough knowledge of related veterinary medical sciences such as pathology, parasitology, immunology and toxicology and /or other fields of veterinary science as required.
Thorough knowledge working with a variety of traditional and non-traditional research animals in both captive and field situations, including birds, ectotherms, wild rodents and other non-domesticated animals.
Effective communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively and provide coaching and training to staff.
Computer literacy to support medical applications for electronic medical records and retrieval and appointment scheduling programs.
Ability to collaborate effectively with all levels of staff: technical, students, faculty and administrators.
Skills to function as a clinical resource to staff and assist with complicated issues.
Education/Training:
Graduate of a School of Veterinary Medicine that is accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association and/or equivalent experience/training.
State of California Veterinary Medical License.
Preferred Qualifications
Board Certification in Laboratory Animal Medicine.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.
The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $130,000.00 - $160,000.00.
This is a 100%, full-time (40 hours per week), career position that is eligible for full UC benefits.
This position is exempt and paid monthly.
